How long does the review take?
Upon submission of all required information, the review may be completed in as fast as 5 working days.
What if the formulation contains Chinese or Western medicine?
- Involvement of Western Medicine Ingredients: Products containing any Western medicine ingredients must be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong and are regulated under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Cap. 138). The product label, ingredient list, and accompanying information must clearly disclose all ingredients and demonstrate safety, quality, and efficacy. Possessing or selling unregistered pharmaceutical products is illegal and carries a maximum penalty of HKD 100,000 and 2 years’ imprisonment.
- Involvement of Chinese Medicine Ingredients: Products containing Chinese medicine ingredients are regulated under the Chinese Medicine Ordinance (Cap. 549). If the packaging makes medical claims or includes specific Chinese medicine names, the unlicensed possession or sale of unregistered proprietary Chinese medicines constitutes a criminal offence, subject to the same maximum penalty of HKD 100,000 and 2 years’ imprisonment.
- Medical Claims Made by Food Products: Even if a product is classified as a food, any claim suggesting treatment or prevention of disease may violate the Undesirable Medical Advertisements Ordinance (Cap. 231).
Can multiple products be reviewed?
Yes. Each product is reviewed on a per‑submission basis, with up to two review rounds provided, and fees are charged according to the number of reviews.
